This year Asthma Australia will again be offering two types of research funding in our National Research Program research grants and scholarships.
Research grants
A call has been made on the Asthma Australia website (asthmaaustralia.org.au) for Expressions of Interest (EOI’s) for grants in two focus areas of our National Research Framework: Basic Science and Social & Public Health. EOIs are due 31 March 2013. The EOI Form and Instructions can be found on the asthmaaustralia.org.au website along with a full overview of the program for 2013.
The website also has a summary of the history of research funding by Asthma Foudantions. This includes information about the three projects which were awarded grants in 2012.
Scholarships
Asthma Australia is delighted to announce the awarding of three PhD scholarships, to commence in 2013. We congratulate the following recipients:
- Melisa Lau who is investigating Genetic Modifiers of Environmental Risk Factors for the Incidence and Remission of Asthma from Childhood to Middle Age. Melisa aims to “identify genes involved in the longitudinal changes in asthma phenotypes (i.e. incidence, remission of asthma) and to identify genes that modify the risk of development or remission of asthma for certain environmental and lifestyle exposures”.
- Hashim Periyalil is investigating Immunometabolism in Obese Asthmatics. Hashim aims to to “identify tailored therapeutic strategies such as newer steroid-sparing anti-inflammatory treatment options for specific populations of obese asthmatics”.
- Mathew Morten’s research aims to “characterise the effect of better asthma management during pregnancy guided by inflammometry on antiviral interferon (IFN) responses in the first 6 years of life and to identify the molecular and cellular mechanisms whereby AAD and RV infection in pregnancy affects antiviral IFN responses and the development of AAD in the offspring”.
